I've waited a long time to see this journal published. This un-cut diary of experiences in Vietnam from 1968-1969 is sometimes raw, at times a little boring, but often breath-taking as it takes you right up to the gritty reality of warfare. I was moved to tears by the experience of Tom Melin holding a wounded man's hand while racing him to a field hospital. I was riveted to every word as I read about the harrowing experience of flying low on gas in the mountains, weather closing in and enemy gun positions staring up at every corner. I enjoyed the escapade with the monkey, laughed at the exploding paint can episode in the cockpit and was again mesmerized by countless acts of valor. I was disgusted by man's inhumanity, by the political indifference to soldier's lives, and the sheer waste that was so often the result of broken leadership at that time. This journal is worth your time - it tells it just how it was - no showmanship or grandstanding. It's the REAL DEAL.Disclaimer: the author is my father, but that does not change my review one iota. The family is not making any $$$ on this book. It's printed and shipped at cost; my father would not have it any other way. This book is a tribute to his life. . . may he rest in peace.
